決けして~ない means “never”. Used with negative verbs.

Examples

車くるまはめったに運転うんてんしません。 I rarely drive a car.

あまり

Means “rarely”. Used with negative verbs.

Examples

最近さいきん絵えをあまり書かけない。 I haven’t been able to draw much lately.

Unlikely

そうもない・そうにない

Means that an action is very unlikely. Made by removing ます from a verb and adding そうもない・そうにない.

Examples

コロナので今年ことしも旅行りょこうしそうもない。 Because of COVID19, it’s unlikely I’ll travel again this year.

Sometimes

たまに

Means “occasionally”, “once in a while”.

Examples

彼女かのじょは抹茶まっちゃをたまに飲のむ。 She occasionally drinks matcha.

時々

時々ときどき means “sometimes”.

Examples

時々遊園地ゆうえんちに行いく。 I sometimes go to amusement parks.

Often

度々

度々たびたび means “often”, “frequently”.

Examples

私わたしの彼女かのじょは度々遅おくれてきます。 My girlfriend is often late.

よく

Means “often”.

Examples

最近さいきん、数学すうがくの練習れんしゅう問題もんだいをよくやっています。 I have been doing a lot of math exercises lately.

Always

いつも

Means “always”, “every time”.

Examples

夏なつの時ときいつもアイスクリームを食べます。 I always eat ice cream in the summer.

ずっと

Means “always”, “continuously”.

Examples

蛇へびがずっと好すきだった。 I’ve always loved snakes.

たものだ

Used to talk about a past situation where something used to frequently occur. Used with a verb in the past tense (た) by adding ものだ.

Examples

子供こどものころはいつも森もりで遊あそんだものだ。 I always played in the woods when I was a kid.
